Description
Nine days, two worlds: the metropolis of Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod, perhaps Russia’s most beautiful merchant city, high above the Volga and Oka. A German- and English-speaking guide shows you around on six days, five hours each – airport pick-up, central hotels with breakfast and both train journeys are included in the total price. Arrival is always the second Sunday of the month.
What kind of trip is this?
This is not a coach group tour – it is yours. We organise everything: 2 nights in Moscow with a guided day, then the high-speed train to the Volga in about four hours, 4 nights in Nizhny Novgorod with four guided days, back to Moscow for 2 more nights with a second guided day – and the transfer to the airport at the end. Tours are guided in your language, five hours a day, privately and only for you. Arrival is always the second Sunday of the month.
Who is this trip for?
You’ll take in Moscow – but you also want to see the Russia behind it: a genuine Volga metropolis with a kremlin, merchant mansions and sunsets over the river that hardly any Western tourist knows.
No waiting for a group departure date: the trip starts every Monday, as soon as there are at least two of you – as a couple, with friends, or as a small private group with several rooms.

🗺️ Your route at a glance
🗓 The itinerary – day by day
Arrival in Moscow
You fly to Moscow independently (arrival at your own arrangement). We pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel in the center. The evening is yours – your first glimpse of the illuminated Red Square is the perfect start.
Moscow – the grand city tour
A full day in the capital with your English-speaking guide: Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin grounds, GUM department store and a ride through Moscow’s famous palatial metro stations.
By high-speed train to the Volga
Morning transfer to the station and a roughly 4-hour high-speed train ride to Nizhny Novgorod – passing Vladimir and the wide expanses of central Russia. Check in at the hotel, then an evening stroll along the Bolshaya Pokrovskaya pedestrian street.
Kremlin, Chkalov Staircase & Volga panorama
A grand city tour: the 1515 kremlin with its 13 towers, views from the city’s crown over the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers, then the famous 560 steps of the Chkalov Staircase down to the riverside promenade.
Merchant city & Maxim Gorky
The magnificent Rukavishnikov Mansion high above the Volga, the Stroganov Church with its ornate white stone facade on the old trading street Rozhdestvenskaya – and traces of Maxim Gorky, whose name the city carried for half a century.
By cable car across the Volga
Glide 13 minutes across the river to Bor by cable car – the finest view of the city and the river. Afterwards, the Strelka with Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Free afternoon; in summer (May–September) a Volga river cruise is well worth it, with sunset at the Fedorovsky Embankment.
Back to Moscow
A relaxed morning, then it’s back to the capital by high-speed train. Free evening – how about a ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre?
Moscow – art & farewell
A second guided stage through Moscow: the Tretyakov Gallery with its great Russian masters, or the modern Zaryadye Park with its floating bridge over the Moskva River – your choice. A farewell dinner at a Russian restaurant.
Journey home – or on to St. Petersburg
Transfer to the airport for your independent return flight. Or add the extension: a high-speed train to the city of the tsars on the Neva.
St. Petersburg extension (+3 nights)
Take the high-speed train to St. Petersburg: the Hermitage in the Winter Palace, the mosaic-clad Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Nevsky Prospekt and a canal boat ride through the “Venice of the North”. From May to October, add Peterhof with its golden fountain cascades. Fly home from St. Petersburg.
